Taking Care of our Skin

By Cristine Sphan

Environmental and genetic factors will cause a lot of wear and tear to your skin throughout your life. But it's never too late to start taking care of your skin. In fact, an essential part of your health, fitness, and beauty regime should be skin care and protection.

The first step to taking care of your skin is preventing damage. The condition of your skin is degraded by sun, wind, pollutants, and simply aging. Wrinkles, age spots, sagging, and dry and itchy skin are common complaints. Below are some steps that you can take to keep your skin looking and feeling its best:

Good nutrition, exercise and rest are the foundations upon which you build beautiful, healthy skin -- inside and out. For your skin to maintain and repair cells, it requires vitamins, minerals, and nutrients. A proper diet helps to ensure this, and is good for your overall health. And don't forget to drink lots of water. Remember that water helps to move waste and nutrients through the system, as well as hydrate the skin.

Shielding your skin from the sun's damaging rays is a vital aspect of skin care. Ultraviolet radiation damages the skin and can lead to wrinkles, premature aging, age spots, and cancer. Using sunscreen helps protect your skin from the sun's rays. But don't over do it. A bit of sunshine every day is good for your skin.

As we age, dry skin is even more common. Younger skin has more sweat and oil glands than older skin. Dry skin can be a result of certain cosmetics, frequent baths, or some medications. If you can, take fewer baths or showers each week, and make sure you use mild soaps. When you do use soap, try using a natural very mild soap that does not contain any dyes or perfumes. Moisturize after bathing. Continue moisturizing throughout the day to keep skin healthy. You may need to moisturize your hands and face several times because they are particularly susceptible to daily damage.

Develop a Skin Care Routine

Ensure you are taking the very best care of your skin by developing some kind of skin care routine based on your skin type, daily activities, and nutritional needs. Following a daily skin care regime will also allow you to more closely evaluate your skin for abnormalities.

A routine for washing is necessary. Wash your skin thoroughly every day to remove the pollutants, dirt, debris, and perspiration that build up daily. Use only warm water to wash your skin and use a mild natural cleanser every few days, if you have dry or sensitive skin. If you have normal or oily skin, be sure to wash with a gentle cleanser on a daily basis.

Your washing routine should include moisturizing. Unless your skin is very oily, you will want to use a moisturizer everyday to keep your skin hydrated and healthy. Use moisturizer all year long, because both indoor winter heat and summer sun can be equally damaging to your skin.

Protection should be an integral part of your daily skin program. Regardless of whether or not you plan on spending much time in the sun, use a natural sunscreen when possible. If you get in the habit of applying sunscreen everyday, you will never be left without protection from the sun's damaging rays.
